Classroom Clubs

You may or may not have heard that we are forming some clubs in our classroom.  For our historical fiction unit in reading, we have formed six book clubs.  We discussed how a club is a group of people that meet because share something together like a common interest or activity.  The students offered up all sorts of examples.  In our case, the students formed clubs by choosing a book that they were interested in reading.  All of our clubs are reading books of historical fiction during the Revolutionary War period of American history.  To establish a “government” for their club, each group wrote a constitution and signed it.  They even took it to the next level and brought them home to be tea-stained, etc., so that they would look antique!  I was so impressed and many a teacher (including Dr. Doherty) has visited the classroom to check out their handiwork.  See for yourself!

We are also going to start up a study club for social studies, and eventually science.  This club is optional and is designed to review the important information from social studies class.  It will meet during recess, weekly at first, and then will meet closer together as the end of the unit nears.

And, finally, I couldn’t resist a photo op of our “football hat club” and thought you’d enjoy it, too.
