"New Year Day"

We began our poetry unit this morning by reading a poem called, “New Year Day” by Ella Wheeler Wilcox.  After hearing the poem aloud, the students worked in 5 groups interpreting the 5 stanzas of the poem.  This was a challenging piece with complicated vocabulary and ideas, but the students took their time, used dictionaries, and had very thoughtful discussions.  Here are some of their words they used to interpret the message of this poem:

“The future is always better than the past.”

“I can feel the new and better world coming.”

“With each century gone by, the evil has disappeared.  The good has started to come.”

“Even though we make mistakes and we struggle, it’s a new year to start over from the beginning again.”

“We are getting closer to becoming whole for the new year, trying hard to get on the right path.”

Happy 2013 everybody!
