Winter Wonderland

I'm sitting at my classroom window as big, white snowflakes fly.  Winter break will begin in just a few short hours and the class is begging for a new post because of all the excitement we have had the past couple of weeks.  It's true, there have been quite a few noteworthy happenings in our little community that deserve an official mention.

The Captain Holiday Sing yesterday afternoon was probably the highlight of the week.  We all sang and were entertained by the many talents of Captain kids and teachers.  I had tears in my eyes throughout the program watching not only my own daughter, but all of the students come together to create such beautiful music together.  We had several members of our class play strings in "Jingle Bells."  A number of our gentlemen performed in a percussion ensemble.  Daniel sang a lovely solo in "Durme, Durme."  I did the hula with the teachers singing "Mele Kalikimaka."  Our own Jonathan was chosen to light the candle for our school before the chorus sang "Candlelight Canon."  More than once I took a moment to just look around and take in the sight of so many hundreds of people of all ages in our community looking at each other with smiles on their faces, singing with joy in their hearts.  To say it was touching does not do it justice.

Lastly, I am delighted to share that Hagrid has also been busy.  Last week and this week while the class was at specials, he went to visit with first grade classrooms.  They have been studying the books of Jan Brett, who is an author/illustrator that features hedgehogs in many of her stories.  The first graders then took their writing workshop time to write about meeting Hagrid and what they learned about hedgehogs.  The first grade teachers agreed to share some of the writings with me when they are finished.  I did get one sneak preview that one student wrote a hedgehog recipe for preparing a mealworm salad.  Hagrid would love that!

Although none of the snow is sticking, it sure is pretty to see today.  I hope your winter break is full of wonder, and that you and yours are happier than hedgehogs eating a mealworm salad.

Much love,
